Pool Shapes and Sizes
Above ground pool shapes are available in round, oval, kidney or keyhole shapes
with oval being the most common. The most common size diameter for round above
ground pools is 3.8 meters. Oval sizes will range from 3.00 x 4.88 meters, 3.66
x 5.49 meters, 4.50 x 9.75 meters, 4.50x 7.0, and up to 5.49 x 13.41 meters. The
walls of an above ground pool regardless of shape and size will be 1.2 or 1.37
meters.
In ground concrete and gunite pools and in ground vinyl pools are constructed on
site so there is more leeway when it comes to deciding on shape and size.
Fibreglass pools are pre-moulded and delivered to job site and are generally
available in either rectangular, kidney, oval or round shapes. In either case,
in ground pools offer more variety in shapes and sizes with the most common
being round or circular, oval, kidney, rectangular, and free form. Variations of
the rectangular shape are keyhole, twinlake, and teardrop. L-shape and
rectangular shapes are good for lap swimming and in the case of an L-shape it
provides for two separate areas to accommodate adults and children. Rectangular
shapes vary in size from 10.70 x 20 meters to smaller 5.20 x 2.50 meters. Kidney
shapes are a popular and aesthetically pleasing shape as they add more visual
interest. They range in size from 9.00 x 4.50 meters to 5.00 x 3.00 meters. Free
form shapes are made to order and can incorporate more landscaping option such
as rock gardens and waterfalls.
Depth ranges from 1.5-2.0 meters to 1.2-1.4 meters. Some Australian water boards
have introduced new laws requiring pool owners to show they are conserving water
before building a new pool. You should check with your local water boards before
building a new pool.
