Pool Buying GuidePool Buying Guide

The type of pool that you choose to buy will depend on the size of the property, which will be using the pool, and your budget. The size of the property will determine how close the pool can be built to the house and the size and type of pool to be constructed. Families with children may want a larger, deeper pool as opposed to adults who may only desire a smaller shallower pool. If money is a concern, it is recommended to build a smaller pool with better quality than spending a lot of money to build a large pool.

Once placement, size and budgetary issues have been decided, the next step is to decide whether to choose an above ground or in ground pool. Above ground pools are more economical, require little if any excavation, take less time to install and can be taken with you when you move. There is a wide range of sizes to fit any yard. Larger ones may require professional installation, but smaller pools can be installed relatively easily. An in ground pool will require professional excavation and installation, can be very expensive, can take up to twelve weeks to install and will be permanent. If an in ground pool is the choice, you will need to decide the material the pool will be constructed from, fibreglass, vinyl liner or concrete. Vinyl liner and concrete pools will be constructed and installed on site; fibreglass pools will be pre-made and delivered to the site and installed.

Depending on the amount of excavation necessary for an above ground pool or with any in ground pool, the next step is to choose a contractor. Talk to at least three different contractors before deciding on one. Get recommendations from people who have installed pools and check into the contractor’s record. Obtain quotes in writing, study the contract and never take the lowest price on construction. It is beneficial to go with the second or third. Lastly, make sure the construction adheres to the Australian Standards for the construction and maintenance of spas and swimming pools, which is in the Building Code of Australia.
